What is the purpose of this test?
The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), Quantitative, PCR test is intended to detect the number of copies of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA in a sample of blood to aid in the diagnosis and management of EBV infections. PCR stands for polymerase chain reaction, a process that copies and reproduces DNA. A Quantitative PCR test is extremely sensitive and can detect an extremely small number of copies of the virus in the blood and other bodily fluids. This assists in the early detection of an EBV infection as well as tracking and monitoring of viral load. Repeat tests can determine the response to treatment, where dwindling amounts of the virus would indicate a positive response to treatment.
Who should be tested?
Symptomatic people should be tested for diagnosis, or those with an active infection may be tested to determine response to therapy. This test may also be used after certain solid organ transplants to determine post transplant EBV related disorders.
What does the test include
This test provides a quantitative analysis of the number of copies of EBV found in the blood.
