Why is this test important? Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the cause of infectious mononucleosis, also called mono, a common viral infection causing symptoms similar to the common cold, including fever, sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes and/or spleen, and fatigue.
Mono can be diagnosed through a complete blood count to check for an increased number of lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) and a monospot test. The monospot can sometimes result in a false negative. In certain cases, when a false negative is suspected the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Antibodies to early Antigen test may be used.
Who should be tested?
Symptomatic people with a negative monospot test would benefit from this test.
What does the test include?
This profile of tests measures the EBV antibodies in the blood and can help determine current or previous infections.
