Why is this test important?
Nearly 30 million Americans suffer from thyroid disorders yet half are undiagnosed because symptoms may be vague or attributed to other disorders. The thyroid regulates a body’s metabolism, the process by which it makes energy. This panel of tests measures the level of thyroid hormones in the blood.
Thyroid disorders are the most common problem affecting the endocrine system, more common in women and are often hereditary. Most thyroid problems are well managed with treatments such as drugs or surgery. There are several types of thyroid disease such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), Hoshimoto’s Thyroiditis, goiters, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer each with its own signs and symptoms. However some common symptoms that may indicate thyroid problems include weight loss, weight gain, fatigue, anxiety and increased heart rate.
