N-Telopeptide Serum Test

Why is this test important?

Osteoporosis is marked by significant loss of bone density resulting in porous, weak bones and an increased risk for fractures.  Often osteoporosis goes unnoticed and is only diagnosed after a bone fracture which can result in significant pain, loss of mobility and possible temporary or permanent disability.

Bone tissues are continually regenerated in a process called bone turnover.  During childhood bone formation exceeds bone resorption resulting in growth. However, around age 30, resorption exceeds formation, and normal bone loss occurs.  N-Telopeptide (NTx) is a byproduct of the bone resorption process found in blood and urine and can be used to measure bone loss.

Risk for developing osteoporosis increases with age and is more common in Asian and Caucasian women, though it can also affect men.  Certain conditions, diseases and medical treatments such as thyroid disease, kidney disease, insufficient calcium and vitamin D consumption, rheumatoid arthritis, Cushing’s disease, steroid use, smoking, inactivity, testosterone deficiency (in men), and alcoholism can inhibit bone formation and increase risk for developing osteoporosis. Dietary and hormonal changes can also increase the rate of bone loss resulting in elevated risk for osteoporosis.

Who should be tested?

The N-Telopeptide (NTx) Osteoporosis Test can be used to assess bone health in menopausal or post menopausal women and those with a family history or risk factors for osteoporosis. This test may also be used to establish a baseline before starting osteoporosis therapy, and again 3 to 6 months later to determine response to treatment.

What does the test include?

This test examines NTx levels in the blood.
